Three Types of Waves                                                                                                           Return to Physics Index

There are three basic types of waves. These waves include Longitudinal, Transverse and Surface waves. Each wave has its own unique characteristics.

Longitudinal Waves move in one direction as the coils move back and forth creating either compression or rarefaction waves. This type of wave is also a seismic wave and is often called a "P" Primary Wave.
Transverse Waves are waves that move up and down and side to side at right angles to each other along the rest point. These waves are also called seismic waves. The Transverse Wave is known as the "S" Secondary Wave. The "S" Wave follows the "P" Wave during an earthquake.
Surface Waves are a combination of Transverse and Longitudinal Waves. Surface Waves are seismic waves. They are known as "L" Waves and the cause the ground to rise and fall like a wave moving across the water.
