Subduction "Convergents"

      Return to Geology Index Page

Subduction or Convergents is where plate boundaries are coming together and the denser plate is being destroyed. Continental Plates are made up of granitic crust which are less dense then the Oceanic Plates which are made up of  denser basaltic crust. As the two plates come together the less denser Continental Crust plate rides on top of the denser Oceanic Crust plate. The denser plate is pushed down deep into the interior of the Earth were it melts and magma rises up to the surface and either forms an Island Arc chain or a Mountain Arc System depending upon the location of the trench created by the collision between plate boundaries.
