Simplified Weather Station Models were developed as more and more weather stations were added to the US Meteorological Weather Map. The amount of information coming in had to be simplified so more data could be placed on the chart. The weather station model information has to fit under the size of a dime on a weather map, so symbols had to substituted for words.
