Scientific Method
Return to Scientific Investigation Index Page
There are many versions of the scientific method. Some methods use five, seven or even nine steps to complete the process. The scientific method is often greatly misunderstood because students and people think that we use the process only to solve problems in some kind of experiment. The scientific method is actually internalized within us every time we make a decision. For an example withered we realize it or not we use the scientific method to choose which music we may buy or even listen to. Here are the five basic steps:
Problem: Something that needs to be solved.
Hypothesis: A statement which starts as I think or I believe that...
Procedure: The step by step process by which we will solve the problem, often called the experiment.
Data: Information gathered in an experiment.
Conclusion: Is what we find from the data collected. It will either agree or disagree with the hypothesis. If it agrees your experiment is done. If you find their is a discrepancy then you need to repeat the experiment or rewrite your hypothesis and try again.
Other Terms: These terms used as part of the experiment.
Control: Something that stays the same during the experiment.
Independent Variable: Something that doesn't need anything in the experiment to work.
Dependent Variable: Something that needs something else for it to occur.
Research: Looking up information about the problem prior to designing the experiment.
Gathering of Material: Material gather to perform the experiment.
