How do you tell if a star is heading towards you or away from you? Scientists used a spectroscope to determine which way the light is shifted in the spectroscope. If the visible light spectrum shows more red than blue the star is heading away from you. If the visible spectrum shows more blue than red then the star is heading towards you.
