Piedmont Province

The Piedmont Province of Virginia is the largest province of Virginia. It totals more than 1/3 of Virginia. The Piedmont starts at the fall line at Richmond and continues west until reaches Lynchburg near the Blue Ridge. The change in elevation across the Piedmont is from250 feet to 2,500 feet. The Piedmont is an area of low rolling hills. The area has been subjected to plate tectonics and is made up of a variety of Metamorphic Rocks such as slate. The Piedmont is drain by five major rivers in Virginia. These rivers include the James, York, Potomac, Rappahannock and the Roanoke. The Piedmont area of Virginia is mainly farm land and horse country. Some major cities include Charlottesville and Fredericksburg's. The area supports a wide range of industry and schools such as the University of Virginia.
