Waves are transfer of energy through a substance from one point to another. Ocean water appears to move in a forward direction, when water actually moves in a circular pattern. The top of the wave is called the crest. The bottom of the wave is called the trough. The wave height is measured from the top of the wave to the bottom of the wave.
