Oceanic Life Zones

    Return to Oceanography Index Page

Ocean life can be divided into three zones of life. Plankton or Planktonic are creatures which float at or near the surface of the water. These life forms have no means of propulsion of their own and drift with the current. Nekton or Nektonic are creatures which spend their lives swimming through the waters and can determine where they will go and are not at the mercy of the currents. Benthos or Benthic creatures spend their life on the bottom of the ocean floor. They are either fixed in one place or can crawl or walk around on the bottom.
