Molar Mass

Return to Chemistry Index Page

Molar mass can be calculated by finding the mass of the elements in the formula. After finding each element's mass you add up the total mass of all the elements like you did in finding the formula mass and that will equal the molar mass.

Example Problem:

Find the Molar Mass of Barium Nitrate

The compound contains one mole of Barium, two moles of Nitrogen and six moles of Oxygen. When you calculate the number of moles and the mass of each of the moles of each element you find that the compound Barium Nitrate contains 261.35g/mol.
