The metric system is a system of measurement. The metric system was created by France and is based on the powers of ten.

1Km= 1000 m which is a kilometer

1Hm= 100 m which is a hectometer

1Dkm=10 m which is a decameter

1m = 1 m (Standard Unit of Measurement in the Metric System)

1dm= .1 m which is a decimeter

1cm= .01 m which is a centimeter

1mm= .001 m which is a millimeter

The metric system may be converted to the English system by remembering one simple conversion.

1 inch = 2.54 cm To convert simply add the total number of centimeters and then divide by 2.54 to get inches. Once you have inches you can convert to feet, yards or miles.
