Ionic Compounds |
Ionic Compounds are chemical compounds that are made up of at least one cation (+) the metal ion and one anion (-) the non-metal ion. They have a give an take relationship between the valence shells of the combining atoms. The metal ion will give up a valence electron where as the non-metal ion will take the valence shell electron that the metal ion is giving. This give and take relationship binds the two elements into a compound. Ionic compounds characteristics include: they are usually solid, brittle, have high melting point, disassociate "soluble" in a water solution and conduct electricity.
