Course Description: This is an integrated thematic program that teaches science the way it really is – a study of nature in which common principles operate in relationship to one another. Our program seamlessly interweaves major scientific disciplines such as Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics and Space Science into a thematic framework. The program encourages technological and computer literacy as well as keeping abreast of scientific innovations. Students are required to plan, research and create various projects throughout the course that will reinforce Anchorage School District and Alaska State Science Standards. Students are encouraged to participate in the Science Olympiad, Alaska Science Fair, and other mentally stimulating competitions. Hands/minds-on activities are provided throughout the year.
Grading Policy: Students will be graded in four different areas. These areas include tests/quizzes, notebooks, labs and projects. Students will be graded on the total point system. The number of points given per assignment will vary. If a student is absent, school district policy states that a student has one day to make up work for each day that they are absent. It is the student’s responsibility to see me to get make-up work and to schedule any labs they need to complete.
Grading Scale:
100-90 A
80-89 B
70-79 C
60-69 D
59-0 F
Tests/Quizzes: Tests will be scheduled at least two days in advance. Quizzes will be both scheduled and unannounced.
Notebooks: Students will be expected to keep a notebook which will be checked on test days. The notebook will contain three areas for each chapter. These areas include vocabulary, section review questions and classroom notes. Each section is worth 20 points, totaling 60 points per check.
Labs: Students must sign a safety contract with the teacher. Failure to follow lab safety will result in failure of that lab.
Projects: Students will be expected to complete various projects throughout the term. Projects must be solved in scientific format.
Homework: Assignments will be given a due date. Late assignments will only be accepted with a valid written verifiable excuse. Late assignments without a written excuse will receive a letter reduction in grade per day.
Extra Credit: A student may earn extra points through the completion of current event reports presented in class from sources such as magazines, newspapers and the Internet. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule class time with the teacher for their presentation. Extra credit reports will not be accepted during the last week of the grading period.
Tutoring: Tutoring will be offered during lunch and class as time permits or by asking questions using the website‘s ask a question feature.
