Electromagnetic waves are energy waves that travel without the need for a medium to carry them. There are many types of electromagnetic waves which include but not limited to: light, Infrared, UV rays and X-Rays. These waves consist of two components electrical and magnetic fields that are at right angles to each other. The wave shape resembles the transverse wave.
Since the electromagnetic wave is made up of two fields one electrical and the other magnetic any change in one will effect the other. Electromagnetic waves make up a greater entity the electromagnetic spectrum. This spectrum is based on the changes of wavelength verses change in energy levels.
