Deltas

    Return to Hydrology Index Page

Deltas are deposition features found at the mouth of rivers as they meet the ocean. Some famous deltas include the Nile Delta and the Mississippi River Delta. Deltas are form as rivers meet the ocean. Rivers can only flow a few miles out into the ocean where they are stop by the hydrostatic pressure of the ocean pushing back. As the velocity of the river slows its sediment load is dump out and layers of sediment begin to form on the ocean floor. After a period of many years, the layers of sediment eventually reach sea level and new land is created called a delta.
