Objective: To excite you about the topic of chemistry!

Course Description: This is an integrated thematic program that teaches chemistry and how it relates to the world around us. The program encourages technological and computer literacy as well as keeping abreast of scientific innovations. Students are required to plan, research, set up, create, interpret data and draw conclusions on various labs throughout the course that will reinforce Anchorage School District and Alaska State Science Standards. Hands/minds-on activities are provided throughout the year.

Grading Policy: Students will be graded in four different areas. These areas include tests/quizzes, notebooks, labs and homework. Students will be graded on the total point system. The number of points given per assignment will vary. If a student is absent, school district policy states that a student has one day to make up work for each day that they are absent. It is the student’s responsibility to see me to get make-up work and to schedule any labs they need to complete. Students who compromise tests by taking or giving answers will receive a zero for that test.

Grading Scale:

100-90 A

80-89 B

70-79 C

60-69 D

59-0 F

Tests/Quizzes: Tests will be scheduled at least two days in advance. Quizzes will be both scheduled and unannounced.

Notebooks: Students will be expected to keep a notebook which will be checked on test days.

Labs: Students must sign a safety contract with the teacher. Failure to follow lab safety will result in failure of that lab.

Homework: Assignments will be given a due date. Late assignments will only be accepted with a valid written verifiable excuse. Late assignments without a written excuse will receive a letter reduction in grade per day.

Tutoring: Tutoring will be offered during lunch and class as time permits or by asking questions using the website‘s "ask a question" feature.

Ethical, Responsible and Legal use of Technology: Students are required to cite all sources when researching, creating projects or other works. It is the students’ responsibility to ensure that any material for example publications, quotes, speeches, Internet etc.; that these sources are properly cited. Failure to properly cite sources will result in the loss of the grade and disciplinary action by the school administration.
