Coastal Plain Province
of Virginia
The Coastal Plain Province of Virginia is the area of Virginia next to the ocean. The Coastal Plain runs the entire length from top to bottom and as far west to Richmond Virginia at the fall line. The Coastal Plain is 10,000 square miles and makes up 1/4 or 25% of Virginia's total land area and is the second largest province in Virginia. The area is very flat and has a gentle slope as it heads west from the ocean. The region rises at a rate or 10 feet to 10 miles. The area is made up of sandy soil and loose sediments and is home to millions of residents of Virginia. The area is drain by several major rivers. These rivers include: The James, The York, and The Potomac. The Coastal Plain has several industries including farming, fishing, logging and tourism to support the region along with several major colleges.
