Course Title: 0413 T/A and 0412 C/T
Grade: Ninth
Prerequisite: Eight-Grade Science and successful science sol testing.
Term Length: One Semester
Required Materials: Science book, Notebook, Pen or Pencil, Compass, Color Pencils and Graphing Paper.
Optional Materials: Calculator and one floppy "A" drive disk.
Course Description: This course is an introduction to the formal study of Geology, Astronomy, Meteorology, Hydrology, and Oceanography, with an emphasis on the development of the major concepts of these disciplines. Theories and Models are stressed including those, which enable the student to understand mineral deposits, fossils, weather, climate, and air and ocean currents.
Laboratory and field study techniques, problem solving skills and career awareness are developed. A science project based on the scientific method is required. This course will help prepare the student for more in-depth science classes at the high school and college level.

Geology Sols:
ES 1, ES 2, ES 3, ES 5, ES 6, ES 7, ES 8, ES 9, ES 10, ES 11 and ES 14.
Geology: Approximately 8 weeks of class time.
Astronomy Sols:
ES 1, ES 2, ES 3, ES 4, ES 12 and ES 14
Astronomy: Approximately 4 weeks of class time.
Meteorology Sols:
ES 1, ES 2, ES 3, ES 4, ES 9, ES 12
and ES 13.
Meteorology: Approximately 3 weeks of class time.
Hydrology Sols:
ES 1, ES 2, ES 3, ES 4, ES 9 and ES 11.
Hydrology: Approximately 2 weeks of class time.
Oceanography Sols:
ES 1, ES 2, ES 3, ES 4, ES 8, ES 9
and ES 11.
Oceanography: Approximately 2 weeks of class time.
Grading Policy: Students will be graded in four different areas. These areas include tests/quizzes, notebooks, labs and projects. Students will be graded on the total point system. The number of points given per assignment will vary.
Tests/Quizzes: Tests will be scheduled at least two days in advance. Quizzes will be both scheduled and unannounced.
Notebooks: Students will be expected to keep a notebook, which will be checked on test days. The notebook will contain five areas for each chapter. These areas include chapter objectives, vocabulary, topic questions, main ideas and classroom notes. Each section is worth 20 points totaling 100 points per check.
Labs: Students must sign a safety contract with the teacher. Failure to follow lab safety will result in failure of that lab. Lab exams will be given in various areas of study. If a student fails to achieve competence, then they must attend mandatory tutoring until competence has been obtained.
Projects: Students will be expected to complete various projects throughout the term. Projects must be solved in scientific format.
Homework: Assignments will be given a due date. Late assignments will only be excepted with a valid written excuse.
Extra credit: A student may earn up to three cumulative points on their grade average per grading period. These points may be earned through the completion of current event reports presented in class from sources such as magazines, newspapers and the Internet. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule class time with the teacher for their presentation. Extra credit reports will not be accepted one week prior before the end of the grading period.
Tutoring: Tutoring will be offered during students’ lunch hour and during class as time permits. Students are reminded that tutoring can be voluntary or assigned according to students’ need. Mandatory tutoring will occurred for students’ who averages are eighty-one and below. Tutoring will occur in room 100 of the Law Building.

Classroom Rules:
All rules in the student handbook apply.
Talking is allowed during open discussions, labs and during lectures when it pertains to the material being taught.
No hats will be worn in the classroom.
No eating or chewing gum will be allowed.
No offensive clothing will be allowed. Students found to be wearing these items will be referred to the office.
Students will remain quiet during intercom announcements and will follow all emergency procedures as instructed by the teacher.
