Anticlines and Synclines

      Return to Geology Index Page

Anticlines are the top of folded beds of rock. anticlines represent high areas above the surrounding area. They are created by compression forces or by magma uplift. Sometimes they can be created by rebound as a depressed area is raised back up after being push down. For example, areas that have been buried under miles of ice can be pushed down then rebound once the ice has melted.

Synclines are the bottom or valley between two anticlines. Synclines represent low areas in the surrounding areas.
